Sam at the Pinewood Derby

Sam started up Cub Scouts this year, and he's been enjoying the variety of activities they offer. This Saturday was his first Pinewood derby race.

Sam spent one scout meeting and a few evenings getting his car ready, and we arrived bright and early Saturday morning for the weigh in:

We were a bit under weight, so a bit of extra weight and hot melt glue had Sam right at the five ounce limit.

The kids were lined up to get a close view of the track:

Six lanes of action:

To the finish gate:

Just like real racing, our morning involved a lot of standing around and waiting while the scout leaders tried to get the scoring system working reliably. It never did, and we finally just had to use the average place after six races to decide the winner.

Finally, it was time for the Bears den to race, Sam's is the purple car in lane four:

Ready for action!

In his six races, Sam scored 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, and 4th. This put him at an overall ranking of 4th place (of nine), good enough for his first trophy:

I was quietly happy that Sam didn't score up one place: the top three from each den had to stick around for the pack championship. Instead, we headed for a celebratory lunch!

  1. Great post! My oldest son did cub Scouts for five years and had a great time. Everything you wrote resonated with me - especially the part about being glad your son didn't place top 3 so you could cut out early. Scouts is great, but can get very time consuming. I trust Sam has earned his bicycling belt loop!
